Mill cuts salaried staff

The 140 salaried staff at the Abitibi-Consolidated paper mill here will number closer to 130 by this time next year after the company unveiled cuts there yesterday.
“It’s part of the company’s plans to reduce staff by 10 percent,” mill general manager Jim Gartshore said this morning. “The plan was announced in 1999 so we’ve been looking at this for some time now.”
Gartshore noted the 10 affected employees were offered “enhanced early retirement packages,” which he regarded as “quite fair.” They were chosen based on their seniority and approaching retirement.
He said the employees are being released through to the end of the year, as the company sees fit.
As the early retirements are meant to reduce staff, the positions obviously will not be refilled.
“We’re now complete. There is no more cuts on the horizon,” said Gartshore.
