A public meeting regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides within town limits has been scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at the Civic Centre.
Mayor Dan Onichuk noted during last night’s council meeting that this meeting was scheduled in response to some public inquiries and concerns over the spraying of pesticides and herbicides on lawns here.
Don Mitchell, a pesticide and herbicide specialist with the Ministry of the Environment, will do a 40-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer period with the audience, the mayor added.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
Also at last night’s meeting (which was pushed back a day due to the Victoria Day holiday), town council approved a request from the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship committee for in-kind contributions for 2006, including sponsoring a rules meeting breakfast in an amount up to $3,000.
Council also agreed to proclaim the FFCBC a community festival, and proclaim July 23-29 as “Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship Week” in the Town of Fort Frances.
In other business, council referred a zoning amendment application from the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board regarding 801 Scott St. (the Fort Frances Bingo Hall) to municipal planner Faye Flatt for processing.
This is to rezone that property from General Commercial (C2) to Institutional (I) for the purposes of potentially using that property as a new ambulance station here.
Also last night, council:
•referred a letter from D.R. Cousineau regarding traffic concerns at the corner of Keating Avenue and King’s Highway to the Traffic Safety Committee for its recommendation;
•approved a break-open ticket licence application from the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary at Bonnie Blue from June 1-Dec. 1;
•passed a bylaw to approve a standard pipe agreement regarding the installation of a watermain within CNR property in Fort Frances (from Mile 88.28 to Mile 88.46);
•passed a bylaw to authorize the levying and collection of a special charge of taxes upon the Business Improvement Association;
•passed a bylaw to approve a municipal response agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources with respect to human/black bear conflict management in town;
