Math effort being lauded

The “Tying it all Together” initiative, which introduces math to students through guest speakers, will get the Rainy River District School Board’s “Recognition of Excellence” at its regular monthly meeting tonight.
As part of the board’s Renewed Math Strategy at Sturgeon Creek School in Barwick, Grade 7 and 8 students there are learning about where math is utilized in many of the professions they’re familiar with.
While exploring careers through Skills Canada, Career Cruising, and the School College Workplace Initiative, the students also are gaining insights into future educational and career pathways.
Through “Tying it all together,” students listen to guest speakers who engage them in conversation and activities related to mathematics within their field while continuing their work with Career Cruising and their IPP (Individual Pathways Plan) development.
They will be involved with Skills Canada presentations that focus on skilled trades where math is a key factor in the related field (i.e., carpentry, welding, mechanics, plumbing, electrical work, etc.)
The students also will attend the SCWI (School College Work Initiative) presented by Confederation College, where they’ll experience college programs and be exposed to the math requirements needed to move themselves forward along a specific career pathway.
“We are trying to help the students comprehend how math is an integral part of everyone’s life,” principal Shane Bliss noted in a report to the board.
Also at tonight’s meeting, trustees will:

•vote for the positions of chair, vice-chair, and an OPSBA rep (board of directors/alternate);
•hear a presentation about indigenous education;
•approve policy 8.32 (Budget Process);
•approve the following policy for stakeholder consultation: 5.80 (Elders, Senators, Knowledge Keepers and Drums) and 6.10 (Community Use of School Facilities and Grounds);
