Press Release
Each year in March, Dietitians of Canada and thousands of registered dietitians across the country bring you Nutrition Month.
This year’s theme is “Stay Active. Eat Like a Champion.”
We constantly are bombarded with messages about eating well and being active. When it comes to making healthy choices, keep it simple:
•Make it a family thing
Be active and eat well together. Pack a healthy snack or lunch, and take it out on the trails with the family.
•Stay hydrated
Drink water before, during, and after exercise.
When choosing other beverages, encourage your kids to go for nutrient-rich options like milk, milk alternatives, and 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices.
•Go for tasty and healthy foods from each food group to fuel your body
Remember, no special diet or supplement is needed for the members of your family to enjoy an active lifestyle.
•Keep healthy foods on hand, on the road, and in the house
Whether it’s a weeknight practice or a weekend tournament, stock up on snacks that will give you and your children the most bang for your dollar.
Having healthy snacks on hand makes the healthy choice the easy choice—and can save you money. Veggies and fruit can be easily packed for eating on the go.
Choose whole grain crackers, bite-size whole grain cereals, and mini pitas and bagels. Cheese, peanut butter, nuts, chick peas, hard-boiled eggs, and yogurt are good protein-rich choices.
•Check out www.nwohealthworks.org and sign up to receive healthy eating tips at work every week in March
You’ll also find information, resources, and links to help you and your family eat well and live active.
Throughout the year, the Northwestern Health Unit offers a variety of food and nutrition programs.
Visit your local office for information on everything from community gardening to learning how to make homemade baby food.
