March has been declared “Red Cross Month” in Fort Frances.
Ammie Gumany, community services co-ordinator (first aid) for the Dryden and District Branch of the Red Cross, said the purpose of “Red Cross Month” is to “raise awareness in the community.”
“We are mainly a volunteer-run organization, and our volunteers are the heart and soul of the Canadian Red Cross,” Gumany said in an e-mail.
“We are always actively recruiting.”
The programs the Red Cross offers in the area include its “Winter Warmth” program.
“We provide mittens and hat to the schools for children that do not have them,” noted Gumany.
“We have volunteer knitters and are in need of some in the Fort Frances area,” she added.
Red Cross also has a disaster management/response program locally.
“We are looking at expanding our team in the Fort Frances area. The training is free,” Gumany said.
Red Cross also trains first-aid instructors, and will be holding a course in May.
