Ontario Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell will be in Fort Frances this Wednesday (Aug. 26) as part of her tour of Northern Ontario.
The first stop on her itinerary will be a visit to the local tourist information centre at 9 a.m.
Accompanied by Deputy Mayor June Caul and town officials, Dowdeswell will receive an overview of the community and issues of local importance.
She then will participate in a walking tour of Point Park.
At 11 a.m., Dowdeswell will tour the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, placing an emphasis on the building’s energy-efficient design.
She then will meet with town councillors and First Nations’ representatives.
Town staff will deliver a presentation about the Rainy Lake Market Square project, which will see the re-purposing of the old hotel into a public market space.
Dowdeswell then will spend the afternoon touring sites of importance to the community, including the local recycling transfer station and Sorting Gap Marina.
She is in Dryden today, then will visit Kenora tomorrow before coming here Wednesday.
She will continue her tour Thursday in Thunder Bay.
The purpose of the tour is for Dowdeswell to listen to the concerns and aspirations of citizens, as well as to promote the cultural richness and diversity of our province.
“I am looking forward to meeting with the civic and community leaders and First Nations’ representatives of these dynamic centres in Northern Ontario,” Dowdeswell said in a press release.
“It will be an enormous pleasure to get to know the people who live in Dryden, Kenora, Fort Frances, Thunder Bay, and the surrounding areas,” she added.
“Ontario is an extraordinary province, and throughout my visit I look forward to highlighting the tremendous work, creativity, and spirit of those who call the north their home.”
