Local youth to tour Asia

A local Sea Cadet will get his chance to sail the Pacific and tour parts of Eastern Asia when he leaves port with the Canadian Navy next week.
“A few months ago, someone from Winnipeg came here and told me about it,” noted Dusty Gray, 16. “I had to apply for it.”
As easy as that, Gray is now among just four Canadian youths who will spend the next four months travelling port to port aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship, which set sails from Victoria, B.C. on March 16–something he’s truly looking forward to.
“I’ve wanted to go to Japan for a while now, and here’s my chance,” he remarked, adding ports of call he’s certain of include San Diego, Tokyo, South Korea, and China.
“It should be a great experience, and it sounds like fun,” he enthused.
Being on the sea certainly is nothing new for Gray, who’s spent the last four summers in Victoria attending a Sea Cadet camp there. And with that, he and the others are expected to help out on the ship.
“I’m not sure what I’ll be doing yet,” Gray said.
Although saying he was excited about seeing exotic destinations, Gray said there was one drawback to being at sea for so long. “Usually, I’m homesick after two-and-a-half months or so but I guess we’ll see,” he remarked.
Gray is slated to return home July 13.
