Area residents are encouraged to tune into “MuchMusic” at 6 p.m. on Sunday to catch the “We Day” broadcast special, which features a clip of local teen Dexter Fichuk.
As leader of the Fort Frances Mob(ilizers) at Fort High, a group associated with Free the Children’s “Me to We” philosophy, the 17-year-old spent many hours over the past year organizing events and fundraising to champion the cause of social change.
With a focus on anti-bullying at the beginning of the school year, Fichuk was selected to be featured in a “We Day” segment.
Senior producer Ken Katigbak and a cameraman visited Fort Frances at the end of August to film Fichuk, his friends, and the bullying awareness concert they had organized.
“They did a really good job,” Fichuk enthused about the two-minute clip.
“They had five hours of footage they had to cut down .. . and they made Fort Frances look really nice,” he added.
The segment, introduced by Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, was shown at “We Day” in Vancouver and will be shown as part of Sunday’s broadcast, which incorporates clips from both Vancouver and the event in Toronto.
Also interviewed in the clip are Curran Strachan, Sam Berube, Sarah Glover, and Adam Egan.
The “Just Stop Bullying” concert, held Aug. 28 at the Townshend Theatre, is featured, as well.
