Local teams set to square off in ‘Go for the Gold’

Three teams have signed up so far for the “Gold for the Gold” knowledge bowl, meaning a local showdown will be needed Sept. 11 before the Northern Ontario regional finals are held Sept. 24-25 at Donald Young School in Emo.
Kim Jo Calder, a club leader with the Rainy River District 4-H Association, said she should be getting the names of all the team members by the end of this week.
She also noted the entry deadline has been extended in an effort to recruit even more teams for the local meet although she strongly urged any interested 4-H members to make up their minds fast.
“I’d like to know [who’ll be competing] and they should be studying for it,” Calder said, noting the questions cover information from all the 4-H clubs to Canadian politics and world news.
Just where the local competition will be held hasn’t been decided yet, Calder said, adding the location will depend on how many teams sign up.
“It could be at Donald Young School,” she remarked. “But if there’s just three teams, we just might get the little room at the Emo Inn.”
On the regional level, Northern Ontario has 12 different 4-H regions that could compete in the Sept. 24-25 showdown, with each region guaranteed a spot.
But so far, Calder only has heard back from the associations in the Kenora, Thunder Bay, and Algoma.
“They are to get back to me this week,” she said. “Algoma [has] to try and get together with some parents to see if they can get [the kids] up here.”
The actual regional competition is slated on the Saturday (Sept. 25), with a reception and social being hosted by the local association the day before.
“Hopefully people will come in on the Friday night,” Calder said.
The winning team from the regional match will go on to the provincial finals Nov. 6 in conjunction with the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
