Local health forum cancelled

A special meeting of the Rainy River District Municipal Association to discuss local health care issues, initially scheduled for Saturday here, has been cancelled.
Fort Frances Mayor Dan Onichuk cited recent developments regarding Rainycrest Home for the Aged—after discussions between its board of management and the deputy minister of health this week—as one of the main reasons for the cancellation.
“That’s a big part of the reason why it’s cancelled. That, and we couldn’t get anybody in from LHINs,” Mayor Onichuk said late Friday morning.
No further information on Rainycrest was available at press time Friday.
Invitations to the forum had been extended to both Gwen DuBois-Wing, the CEO for the Local Health Integration Network, and Janice Beazley, vice-chair and Fort Frances rep of the LHIN board.
DuBois-Wing told the Times she was unavailable to attend due to the short notice.
She did note the LHIN board had been in Fort Frances on Dec. 15-16, and that it would be coming back in future “as our planning process matures.”
Saturday’s meeting was planned as a forum for elected officials from across the district to discuss the LHINs, the Family Health Team, Rainycrest, and land ambulance.
