Local businesses ward off listeriosis

As the reach of a listeriosis outbreak reaches further, local businesses are taking precautions to protect the public.
“Listeria monocytogenes (commonly called Listeria) is a type of bacterium often found in food and elsewhere in nature. It can cause a rare but serious disease called listeriosis, especially among pregnant women, the elderly or individuals with a weakened immune system. In serious cases it can lead to brain infection and even death,” explains the Health Canada website.
The outbreak originated at a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto and has led to the recall of all products manufactured at the facility.
And while Maple Leaf expands the scope of the food recall, local retailers and caregivers have reacted accordingly.
“We have removed any type of meat off our shelves,” listed in the recall said one local business owner who asked not to be identified.
Edith Bodnar, administrator of Rainycrest Long Term Care Facility said the establishment is ensuring the well-being of its clients by adhering to the recall as well.
“We did pull some product off the shelves,” she explained.
So though it seems local businesses have things under control, Health Canada is advising Canadians to be wary and dispose of any suspect meat.
In a press release the Northwestern Health Unit recommends residents take the recall seriously and suggests, “residents carefully check the updated list and their refrigerators and freezers for any of the recalled items which may be contaminated.”
According to the NWHU’s release, products manufactured by the plant have been available locally for purchase-increasing the necessity for a thorough inspection of foods at home.
Items manufactured at the plant will have an establishment number of 97B-the code to identify which plant it came from.
Symptoms of listeriosis include: flu-like symptoms, fever, nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, headache, constipation and persistent fever.
And because of the bacteria’s 30 day incubation period, it may take up to 90 days for symptoms to appear
