Local ‘birders’ host tourney

The Fort Frances Badminton Club held its invitational tournament last weekend and saw 105 participants—a record for the event—compete, including from Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Kenora, Rainy River, Marathon, and Sioux.
In the under-10 girls’/boys’ singles event, Nicole Horn claimed top spot be defeating Anika Alexander in the final. The consolation winner was Skylar Arpin, who defeated Erin Gustafson.
In the under-13 girls’ singles event, Melissa Liew (Winnipeg) defeated Caitlin Dansen (Winnipeg) while the consolation winner was Jillian Berry, who beat Jessica Horn.
In the under-13 boys’ singles event, Owen Kurvits (Marathon) defeated Andrew Thiessen (Winnipeg) in the final while Robert Stevens won the consolation crown by downing Ryan Shouldice.
In the under-16 boys’ singles event, Benjamin Kurtvis (Marathon) beat Tim Desjardins in the final while the consolation title went to Tim Bruyere, who beat Jeremy Caul.
In the under-16/19 girls’ singles event, Natalie Desjardins defeated Alexandra Dansen (Winnipeg) in the final while the consolation winner was Sandy Elliot, who won over Sena Lam (Winnipeg).
In the under-19 boys’ singles event, Joel Ashworth (Rainy River) won the title by beating Justin Enge while Chris Jodoin (Rainy River) claimed third place with a win over Jon Drew.
In the 50+ men’s ‘B’ singles event, Greg Chan (Westwin) defeated John Bagacki for the title while Andres Villafana (Winnipeg) beat Ralph Horn in the consolation match.
In the women’s ‘B’ singles event, Nikki Bagacki claimed the crown by topping Carole MacKintosh while Wendy Horn took third with a win over Carrie Shouldice in the consolation final.
And in the men’s/women’s ‘A’ singles event, Les Gamble (Thunder Bay) won the event over Dave Jonhunen (Thunder Bay) while Manami Alexander captured the consolation over Mark Schaub (Sioux Lookout).
The under-10 girls’/boys’ doubles event was won by Arpin and Bryan Liew (Winnipeg), while the under-13 girls’ doubles event was won by Melissa Liew (Winnipeg) and Veronica Lau (Winnipeg).
The under-13 boys’ doubles event was won by John Sletmoen and Ryan Shouldice while Rory Bagacki and Keifer Campbell teamed up to win the consolation title.
The under-16/19 girls’ doubles event was won by Lam (Winnipeg) and Natalie Desjardins.
The women’s 50+ ‘B’ doubles was won by Carrie Shouldice and Shari Bujold, while the men’s ‘B’ doubles was taken by Jimmy Ho (Winnipeg) and Andres Villafana (Winnipeg).
The under-16/19 boys’ doubles event was won by Joel Ashworth (Rainy River) and Chris Jodoin over Tim Desjardins and John McCormack, while the consolation went to Tim Bruyere and Ben Morriseau.
The men’s/women’s ‘A’ doubles event was taken by Benno Kurvits (Marathon) and Dion Berube (Marathon) over Clarissa Koh (Winnipeg) and Manami Alexander, while the consolation went to Greg Chan (Westwin) and James Buffee (Westwin).
The under-10 mixed event was won by Nicole Horn and Celia Berry while the under-13 mixed was taken by Melissa Liew (Winnipeg) and Owen Kurvits (Marathon), who defeated Alannah Harrison (Winnipeg) and Matt Isaac (Winnipeg) in the final.
The consolation was taken by Rory Bagacki and Hannah Taylor over Keifer Campbell and Jillian Berry.
The under-16/19 mixed event was won by Alexandra Dansen (Winnipeg) and Benjamin Kurvits (Marathon) over Natalie Desjardins and Justin Enge, while the consolation was taken by Corrissa Hanson (Rainy River) and Dustin Mowe (Rainy River).
The ‘B’ mixed event was won by Nikki and John Bagacki over Wendy and Ralph Horn, while the consolation was taken by Paul Forget and Anne Flatt over Carrie Shouldice and Guy Stromberg.
And the ‘A’ mixed event was won by Clarrisa Koh (Winnipeg) and Simon Liew (Winnipeg).
