A local band that’s been rockin’ Fort Frances for the last several years is set to re-locate this summer, but first will be going out with a bang.
A farewell rock concert is planned for “Tugnut” tomorrow night at the Ukrainian Hall.
“It’s our last one,” said Joey Egan, one of the three band members. “It’s our last local show. We’re moving out east. We’re trying a fresh start, re-locating in Ottawa.”
Egan noted the band wants to move to a place where they can take the next step toward stardom.
“The young pup in the band is graduating this year,” he said, explaining why they were waiting to make the move.
He said the band initially had planned to move as close to Toronto as possible, but chose Ottawa in the end because they’d heard there was a good underground music scene there.
As well, one band member has family there they can use as a support mechanism.
“We’ll be living in the van,” Egan added. “We’ve got a big van.”
Tugnut also is planning to tour most of Ontario and parts of Quebec this summer.
“We’re going as far as Montreal,” he said, noting they will play in places like Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor, North Bay, and many more.
He said they’ll probably look for a place to stay in Ottawa while they’re there.
Tomorrow night’s concert at the Ukrainian Hall, which starts at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30), also is being used as a fundraiser for their summer tour.
Two other acts—“Chore” and “Mico”—also will take the stage here tomorrow.
Chore is a southern Ontario band that will open for Tugnut. According to Egan, they play a softer rock than Tugnut.
“We’re like heavy, heavy metal,” said Egan of his band’s style.
“Chore is unreal,” he added. “They’re so good. They’re the best of the underground; a hard-working band.
“They’re one you’re not gonna want to miss,” he stressed.
Mico plays a more punk rock style.
Tickets cost $7, and the show is suitable for all ages. Adult chaperones will be on hand to supervise.
