Local among oldest drivers

When news hit many major outlets yesterday of New Zealand’s oldest driver, Bob Edwards, who still is on the road at 105 years old, Fort Frances resident Hubert Medhurst was intrigued.
Medhurst, who turned 105 on April 25, also is a licensed driver.
“I saw it on the news last night and I thought, ‘I’m 105 and I still drive,’” he noted this morning.
Given Edwards was born on Feb. 15, he is a little more than two months older than Medhurst.
But Medhurst now realizes he is among the oldest licensed drivers in the world.
The Times could not confirm if Medhurst is the oldest driver in Canada or even Ontario, but he’s certainly the oldest licensed driver in Fort Frances.
“I don’t have any problems driving around town,” he remarked, though admitting he does not drive out-of-town.
Medhurst, like Edwards, received he licence in 1925 and has been driving for 88 years.
His license is valid until September, 2014.
