Local air cadet Jackson Gillon was awarded the Top Gliding Scholarship Course Cadet (Northwestern Ontario) Award at the graduation ceremony held Friday (Aug. 15).
Gillon, a cadet with 908 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Fort Frances, was selected to attend the gliding scholarship course after having achieved excellent school marks, successfully passing a difficult exam, and impressing a panel of interviewers.
“It is hard to summarize what the summer was, but I can say it was the best summer ever!” enthused Gillon. “Next year I hope to attend the Power Pilot Scholarship Course and then one day become a commercial pilot.”
Gillon was among 61 gliding scholarship recipients who were able to receive their wings this summer.
RGS (Pra) is one of five gliding centres across Canada, which are an integral part of the air cadet flying program.
Most centres operate during the spring, summer, and fall, offering familiarization flights, glider pilot scholarships, and introduction to aviation courses for selected cadets through the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Program.
