A partnership of local agencies and organizations is inviting the community to join in the Interagency Pride Event being held “in a spirit of inclusion and celebration” on Monday, June 8, at the 52 Canadians Arena ice surface at the Memorial Centre.

The event will run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., beginning with a mini pride parade followed by a traditional opening and “an afternoon filled with activities, education and community connection,” organizers said in a press release.

The event, which takes place on a PA Day, is designed to celebrate diversity, support members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and create a welcoming space.

Participants are encouraged to wear their best Pride attire and join the parade, which will gather outside the 52 Canadians ice resurfacer door and march into the arena. A prize will be awarded for the best outfit.

Following the traditional opening, guests will have the opportunity to visit resource tables, enjoy a free grab-and-go dinner, participate in Pride trivia, capture memories at a photo booth, enjoy a bouncy castle and other inflatables, and enter for giveaways throughout the afternoon,” organizers said.

Hands-on activities at the event include stations where participants can create friendship bracelets, rainbow dreamcatchers, painted mugs, decorated picture frames, custom buttons and tie-dyed socks to take home.

Five speakers will share personal stories and perspectives that highlight the diversity of experiences within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and among allies. Topics will include the experience of coming out, the perspective of a parent of a queer-identified child and other journeys that reflect resilience and acceptance.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, whether they identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, are family members, friends or allies, or simply wish to learn more and show their support. The event is free of charge and open to the public.”

The celebration is being presented through the collaborative efforts of local agencies Giishkaandago’Ikwe Health Services, Agency One Cultural, Rainy River District School Board, Seven Generations Educational Institute, OPP Mobile Crisis Response Team, Canadian Mental Health Association, Northwestern Ontario Metis Child & Family Services, United Native Friendship Centre, Weechi-it-te-win Family Services and Grand Council Treaty 3.
