Press Release
A Geraldton man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and failing to pay $4,000 in fines from previous safety-related wildlife convictions.
Peter Atlookan Jr. was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
His firearm was forfeited to the Crown.
Court heard that back on Oct. 12, a conservation officer stopped the vehicle Atlookan was driving on Storm Road, 20 km north of Nakina.
The officer found a loaded firearm behind Atlookan’s feet.
Justice of the Peace John Guthrie heard the case March 23 in Geraldton.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds hunters that it is illegal to possess a loaded firearm in a vehicle or vessel, including aircraft, snowmobile, ATV, or motorboat.
It also is hazardous, and has led to injuries and fatalities.
