The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test results will be presented to Rainy River District School Board trustees at their regular meeting tonight at Rainy River High School.
At total of 220 students attempted the test in March—a participation rate of 92 percent, which is comparable with the provincial participation rate of 93 percent.
The report to the board notes the deferral rate locally has decreased to just two percent, meaning more students are writing the test in Grade 10 when they are first eligible.
“Deferring students who might not be successful may increase success rates on the assessment, but this decreases the opportunities that students have to gain this graduation requirement,” it explains.
Meanwhile, the results show 75 percent of district students were successful, compared with 70 percent last year.
“This is a five percentage point increase in success rate from the previous year,” the report notes.
The provincial success rate this year was 82 percent, down from 83 percent a year ago.
For 2015-16, the Board Leadership Team will continue to have numeracy and literacy as key pillars of School Improvement Planning and Board Improvement Planning for Student Achievement.
Also at tonight’s meeting, trustees will:
•award the Recognition of Excellence to Riverview School for its parent engagement;
•look to approve the following policies—4.11 (Student Health) and 6.63 (Video Surveillance);
•look to rescind the following policies—4.12 (Provision of Health Support Services), 4.14 (Allergies–Life Threatening), and 6.05 (Facility Partnerships);
•look to approve the following policies for stakeholder consultation—8.23 (Competitors’ Assistance Fund), 1.65 (Advocacy), and 8.31 Donations;
