Press Release
Schools of the Rainy River District School Board are hosting a variety of events to celebrate Family Literacy Week (Jan. 25-29).
Jan. 27 is National Family Literacy Day, which was created by the ABC Canada Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada in 1999 to promote the importance of reading and learning together as a family.
This year’s theme is “Sing for Literacy.”
Singing is a great literacy activity for families because it provides a fun way to expand spoken vocabulary and creates a strong bond.
Singing allows you to learn patterns of words, rhymes, and rhythms, and is strongly connected to language skills.
Improvement in literacy is a major focus in all of the board’s schools.
Teachers support students and other classroom teachers in a multitude of ways, such as by assisting in implementing research-based strategies, addressing the differentiation of student needs, and promoting the literacy connection between home and school.
The Rainy River District School Board values its partnership with parents, and recognizes that parent involvement contributes to student learning and achievement.
Parents are encouraged to participate in the Family Literacy Week events that will take place at their child’s school, and to witness first-hand the multitude of ways students are learning to read and reading to learn!
