It was another busy day for lightning fire starts as the Northwest Region recorded 16 new fires by the early yesterday evening.
Resources are strained as the fire load has increased to 111 active fires. Twenty-eight of those fires are “not under control,” 10 are “being held,” 10 are “under control,” and 63 are “being observed.”
Burning conditions are also on the rise, particularly in the Kenora area where an “extreme” fire hazard blankets the district. “High” to “extreme” fire hazards exist in Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Fort Frances districts.
“Moderate” to “high” fire hazards prevail in the Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts. The far north features a “moderate” to “low” hazard at this time.
New fire starts yesterday included Fort Frances fire #30 is located on an island in Quetico Lake, approximately 28 kilometres southwest of Atikokan. At 0.1 hectares, the fire is “under observation.”
Fort Frances fires #31 (0.1 ha.), #32 (0.3 ha.) and #33 (0.1 ha.) are located near the eastern boundary of Quetico Provincial Park, approximately 58 km southeast of Atikokan. All three fires are “under observation.”
Dryden fire #36 is located near Lost Lake, approximately nine km south of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. At 0.1 ha., the fire is “being held.”
Kenora fire #97 is located on an island off Bag Bay on Shoal Lake, At 0.1 ha. it has been declared “out.”
Kenora fire #98 is located near Bridge Lake, approximately 78 km northeast of Kenora. The 1.5 hectares fire is not under control.
Dryden fire #37 is located approximately five km south of Borups Corners. At 0.2 ha., the fire is “not under control.”
Dryden fire #38 is located on a peninsula on southwest corner of Eagle Lake, approximately 24 km south of Vermilion Bay. The 0.1 ha. fire is “under control.”
Sioux Lookout fires #99 and #100 are located near the north shore of Lac Seul, approximately 50 km northwest of Sioux Lookout.
Red Lake fire #151 is located four km northwest of far north community of North Spirit Lake. At 0.5 ha., the fire is “being held.”
Red Lake fire #152 is located near the east shore of Nungesser Lake, approximately 49 km north of Red Lake. At 0.1 ha., the fire is “not under control.”
Red Lake fire #153 is located near Pringle Lake, approximately 67 km north/northeast of Red Lake. At 0.1 ha., the fire is “being held.”
Red Lake fire #154 is located near Jubilee Lake, approximately 98 km east of Red Lake. At 0.1 ha., the fire is “not under control.”
Red Lake Fire #155 is located near Larus Lake in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, approximately 69 km northwest of Red Lake.
Thunder Bay fire #34 is located near Smoothrock Lake in the Wabakimi Provincial Park. At 0.2 ha. the fire is “not under control.”
Thunder Bay fire #35 is located near Kopka Lake, approximately 39 km south of Armstrong. The two ha. fire is “not under control.”
