Lightning sparks fire on island

Staff

While the district was hit with stormy weather yesterday, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported only one fire start resulting from lightning.
Fort Frances Fire #19 was reported about 35 km northeast of here, on an island on Red Gut Bay.
The blaze, which started when lightning hit a tree, was listed as “out” as of this morning.
There currently are no active fires in the Fort Frances District.
MNR fire supervisor Harrold Boven said with yesterday’s rainfall, the fire hazard is “low” in the west half of the district.
But it ranges from “low” to “extreme” in the eastern half as some areas did not get much precipitation yesterday and are in desperate need of rainfall, such as parts of Quetico Park.
