Legion gathering stories

The Fort Frances Legion is gathering stories from locals who have served to ensure they’re included in a future Military Service Recognition Book.
The book actually is the second one being put together by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario Command that’s meant to commemorate those from the region who have served Canada.
“There were no submissions from the area here, though, for that book, so we’re hoping to rectify that this time and get some people who might be interested,” explained Jenn Soderholm, office manager with the local Legion branch who is helping to collect submissions from this area to send in.
“Whether they’re veterans, or children of veterans who have passed away who would be interested in having something that would commemorate their parent’s time of service,” she noted.
“This is any service at all—whether it was wartime or peacetime,” Soderholm stressed, including World War I, World War II, Korea, a Special Duty area, peacetime, or other service, and for all branches of service.
Alongside basic information, submissions can include up to 150 words of a person’s life history, awards for bravery, or other details.
Photos also will be accepted with the submission, although copies are being requested since photos that are submitted will not be returned.
Submission forms are available to be picked up at and dropped off the Legion, said Soderholm, with her hours being Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
If people have questions, or would like the submission forms mailed out, they can contact her at the Legion at 274-0129.
The deadline for people to drop off submissions at the local branch is March 25 as the forms have to be into Winnipeg by March 31.
