FORT FRANCES—While most of the people using the skate park here tend to be on the young side, the skate park committee is appealing to a broader audience with its next fundraiser—a concert featuring the Thunder Bay “Legends.”
The concert, slated for Wednesday, Nov. 15, will feature tribute artists to Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and possibly one more music star, committee chairman Rob Tovey said Thursday morning.
“We’re just starting the promotion for it,” he noted, adding residents can expect to see ads promoting the concert around town in the next couple weeks.
Tickets are expected go on sale next week. They will cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
The concert, which will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the Townshend Theatre, promises to be a solid two hours of classic tunes.
Tovey noted the skate park committee is confident the tribute concert will be a solid gold hit.
“From what we know, the last time the ‘Legends’ were here, it was a sell-out,” he remarked. “This time we’re going to have different artists—Elvis and Patsy Cline for sure, and maybe a third might come along.”
The Riverside Foundation for Health Care brought the Thunder Bay “Legends” to the Townshend Theatre twice in 2004—once in April and again in October.
The sold-out shows netted almost $11,000 for the Foundation that year.
In related news, Tovey said the skate park committee will be pushing its “Buy A Brick” campaign hard this winter.
“We’ll work it right through to spring. We’re hoping by then to be done,” he noted. “We’ll need about $40,000 with the last push of the brick campaign. We’ve already made about $70,000 on it.
“We’re hoping with the Kiwanis behind us, we can finish it off over the winter.”
Tovey revealed organizers will be re-launching the campaign in a new and different way, but added he wanted the public to wait a while to see just how.
Bricks cost $100 each, which will be installed at the skate park with an individual, family, or company name on it.
Anyone wanting to buy a brick can call Tovey at 274-6113.
The skate park committee is aiming to raise funds and pay back the town, which agreed to provide bridge financing back in July.
Under the agreement, the town paid the skate park committee’s outstanding invoices—in the amount of $107,473.82—to contractors.
The local Kiwanis Club and skate park committee is continuing fundraising activities until a minimum of half the balance (roughly $54,000) is raised.

Correction
Due to incorrect information provided to the Times, it was wrongly reported in last Thursday’s Daily Bulletin that the Thunder Bay Legends would perform a concert here Nov. 15 to raise money for the local skate park.
While there will be a fundraiser concert that day at the Townshend Theatre featuring Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline tribute artists, these performers have absolutely no association with the Thunder Bay Legends.
The Thunder Bay Legends do, however, have tentative plans to perform here in April, 2007.
The Times regrets for any inconvenience or confusion this error may have caused.
