Latest EQAO test results released

Press Release

The 2018-2019 Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results have been released.
School and system leaders of the Rainy River District School Board have met to analyze and interpret the results.

These results, along with other assessments, help the school board to develop and refine strategies for achievement in all areas of the curriculum, including literacy and math.

The 2018-2019 results show continued success in specific areas, as well as assist in identifying areas where further growth and improvement are needed.

In 2018-2019, 180 Grade 3 Rainy River District School Board students wrote the Primary Reading and Writing Assessments.

In reading, 62 percent of Rainy River District School Board Grade 3 students achieved at or above the provincial level of achievement.

This is an increase of three percentage points from 2017-2018.

In writing, 57 percent achieved at or above the provincial level of achievement, which is on par with the results from the previous year.

For the Junior level assessments, 190 Grade 6 Rainy River District School Board students wrote the reading and writing EQAO tests.

In reading, 73 percent of Grade 6 students achieved at or above the provincial level of achievement, which is a slight increase from the previous year.

In writing, 74 percent of Grade 6 students achieved at or above the provincial level of achievement. This is an increase of 12 percent points from 2017-2018.

Of the first-time eligible (FTE) students who participated in the Ontario Secondary School Literary Test–those in Grade 10 in the 2018-2019 school year–67 percent were successful.

This is an increase of eight percentage points from the previous year.

However, it still demonstrates a need for improvement, as compared to the provincial rate of 80 percent.

Meanwhile, mathematics also continues to be a priority of the Rainy River District School Board.

In 2018-2019, 180 Grade 3 students participated in the EQAO mathematics test. Of those students, 56 percent of Grade 3 students achieved at or above the provincial standard.

This is an increase of nine percentage points from the 2017-2018 school year.

Of the 190 Grade 6 students who wrote the EQAO mathematics test, 36 percent achieved at or above the provincial standard, which is on par with the results from the previous year.

Of the 87 Applied Mathematics students who wrote the Grade 9 mathematics test, 52 percent achieved at or above the provincial standard.

This result highlights an increase of 22 percentage points from 2017-2018 and exceeds the provincial results.

For the 126 students in the Grade 9 Academic Mathematics, 82 percent achieved at or above the provincial standard. This is just slightly below the provincial results.

Literacy and mathematics continue to be priorities of the Rainy River District School Board.

This year, the board will continue with small group, guided instruction in literacy, allowing teachers to plan for and monitor student growth, and to provide immediate and responsive feedback.

In math, the numeracy co-ordinator will co-develop professional learning with teachers based on student math learning needs.

Professional learning will be shared with principals, and guide future co-teaching, coaching and co-learning.
