Large crowd to attend business awards

Around 90 local businesses and individuals will be in the limelight Saturday night at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce’s 10th-annual business awards gala at La Place Rendez-Vous.
“We have over 200 people coming so far. The majority of the nominees are coming,” noted Chamber office manager Dawn Booth. “We have quite a few more people attending than we did last year.
“All previous winners were invited, all Chamber members, all the Rainy River Future Development Corp. Customer Service winners—it’s not just for the nominees,” she added.
Tickets for the gala are available at the Chamber office until the end of Friday (5 p.m.) They cost $45/person for Chamber members and $50 for non-members.
There is a discount if you purchase a table of 10.
The gala starts with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 and then the awards program, which should run well over two hours.
Since this is the Chamber’s 10th-annual business awards, Booth said they’re looking to make it extra special. The black tie optional affair will feature video clips of the nominees put together by Randy Thoms of Shaw Cable.
“I’m very excited to see the final product. It should be very interesting,” she remarked. “It will add a special touch to the banquet, and give all the nominees a little extra recognition, as well.”
The evening also will include a silent auction and a “Dutch” auction—the latter for a 52” screen TV.
“[The Dutch auction] is kind of a reverse auction. So you start off really high, and then every 15 or 30 seconds, the price goes down and down. It’s more of a waiting game—if you’re willing to wait longer, you can get a better deal.
“But the first person who speaks up will get it at whatever price it’s at,” explained Booth. “It should be something different, something exciting.”
