The Fort Frances Lakers have added another new face to the team’s blue-line, as the SIJHL club signed defenceman Owen Stauber on Tuesday.
Stauber, who attended the Lakers’ prospect camp in International Falls last month, is from Hermantown, Mn. where he played for the Hawks high school program last season.
As a member of the team that made it all the way to the Class A state finals before falling to Saint Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights, Stauber played in 30 games while scoring three goals and adding 11 assists.
“Owen showed during the prospect camp that he has the ability to make the next step to Junior A,” Lakers head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan said.
“He is a good skater, he moves the puck well, and he reads the ice to jump into the offensive play.
“As with many of our young prospects, Owen will need some seasoning to adjust to the pace and skill of junior hockey, but we feel he will be a solid defenseman for us and play in key situations,” he added.
Stauber is the fifth newcomer to be signed by the Lakers during the off-season, joining fellow defenders Ethan Brekke and forwards Mason Meyer, Mathew Chasse, and Brennan Nesrallah.
Six players from last year’s SIJHL runner-ups have also been locked up over the course of the summer, with goaltender Tanner Hamilton and forwards Merritt Rysavy, Colton Spicer, Davis Smith, Alex Bruess and Jordan Christianson all slated to return.
Spicer will have the chance though to attend the main camp of the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves at the end of this month, where he will attempt to make that team’s roster.
