Two district townships each were awarded $100,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. for road upgrades and other infrastructure projects.
Lake of the Woods will use the funding for upgrades to Luft Road, Tote Road, Frenchman’s Rock Road, and Lakewood Drive.
A better well water supply also will be tapped, and new firefighting equipment will be purchased.
The total cost of the project is $133,300.
Meanwhile, Dawson will be upgrading Olsen Road, Belro Lane, Wilson Creek Road, and Byrnes Road.
As well, a municipal garage will be converted into a fire hall, the heating system will be improved, and a new non-potable well for filling fire trucks will be tapped.
The total cost of this project also is $133,300.
“We’ve got our own funding in place for the other portion so we’ll be starting soon,” said Pat Giles, who is the clerk for both townships. “Most of the work will be done by the summer.”
Northern Development and Mines minister Jim Wilson, who also chairs the NOHFC, made the announcement last Friday at the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association’s annual meeting.
The province also is investing funds in road and other infrastructure projects in Rainy River, Ear Falls, and Marathon.
