Knox United Church prepares to continue its relatively new tradition of “Soup for the Soul” with a freezer full of various soups ready to be sold this Saturday.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at Knox United in Fort Frances quickly became aware that the regular plan for an in-person bake sale wasn’t going to be possible. Instead, the Church put together an idea which wouldn’t demand a large gathering of people indoors.

Church member Ellen Anderson, who helps with the soup sale and many other church activities, said the thought of a soup sale was a group idea stemming from wanting to offer a warm meal to people who don’t often cook for themselves.

Knox United Church’s freezers are filling up with delicious soups ready to be sold as part of their “Soup for the Soul” fundraiser that will run this Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. To place an order, call the church at 807-274-4543, or email them at knoxknet@gmail.com. – Liam Oliver Neilson photo

This, along with a system where people could order in advance and spend less time face-to-face during the outbreak, made for a perfect plan.

“We have a number of people who are on their own and older who aren’t cooking as much for themselves,” Anderson said.

“Take it out, defrost it, and they’ve got something nourishing. Totally better than some of the more processed fast foods they might be eating.”

Another member of the congregation, Ruth Brockie, said proceeds from the sale go towards the United Church Workers (UCW) group, which assists with social support projects like homelessness and the Salvation Army.

Offering the flavours of wild rice, hamburger and chicken noodle, Soup for the Soul runs Jan. 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The church states pre-orders to be preferred, but soups are also available to purchase at the door without guarantees of remaining flavours.
