The local Kiwanis Club has been buoyed by the number of people who are coming on board as new members.
Public response has been “incredible” after the local service club put a call out to the community for new members, said Scott Turvey, one of the club’s directors.
After years of service in the community, membership numbers had dropped down to only 18, many of whom were their 80s and no longer active members, Turvey noted.
It had reached a point where the organization would have had to hand in its charter and fold if no new members joined up.
But since beginning a membership drive this fall, Turvey said the club essentially has doubled its membership—bringing in 18 new members at this point.
“We’re just revitalized,” he enthused, noting these new members also are younger and come from a wide cross-section in the community.
When the club first set out to rebuild its membership, Turvey said they didn’t anticipate such an instant response.
Rather, they were expecting to find five or so new members with the first membership drive, followed by some more through another push, and so on.
Of course, even more members are welcome to join the community group, Turvey stressed.
New members are set to be officially sworn in later this month.
From there, Turvey said the Kiwanis will be looking at what sort of projects they will tackle in the new year.
