The Rainy River District School Board is looking to give kindergarten students a little more time in the classroom to help prepare them for further schooling after approving at new schedule at last night’s regular meeting.
With the exception of North Star Community School in Atikokan, all board elementary schools will see JK/SK students attend class for a full days, every other day, with each level alternating on every second Friday.
The new schedule will see SK students go full days Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and JK students attend full days Tuesdays and Thursdays. JK/SK combined classes will run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for SKs, and just Monday and Wednesday for JKs.
The board said the increased time for SK students will allow them to meet the demands of an expanded curriculum, and better prepare them for grade one.
The schedule move also provides more consistency for parents, students, and staff, it noted.
Principals have been in consultation with their school councils, parents, and staff, on the issue. And at the April board leadership team meeting, they reported the consensus among stakeholders to move to a new schedule was extremely high.
The scheduling will not change in Atikokan, where it has been different for some time. SK students there will continue to attend full days while JKs will attend a half-day every day.
