After 15 hours of cutting, sewing and batting, three young girls can now call themselves quilters thanks to teacher Kathleen guild-Gunderson.
The Crazy Ladies quilting class has wrapped up their second session and the three students brought home their very own quilts.
“It was really fun,” said 12-year-old Dayna DeBenedet. “It was my first time, and it was actually really easy.”
The classes ran four days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a half hour lunch break as DeBenedet, nine-year-old Lauren Miller and 12-year-old Katie Bondett learned the ins and outs of making their own quilts.
“It’s pretty fast work,” said DeBenedet. “I thought assembling the blocks was the best part.”
The girls began by bringing in nine 14.5’’ pieces of cloth of their choice of colour, and then were led through quilting step-by-step.
“They were a really good group, they had a lot of fun,” said guild-Gunderson who taught her own tricks of the trade to the girls.
“Cut out the smile or you’ll have dragon teeth,” she said, explaining how the fabric had to be cut to avoid rough edges.
This is only the second time the quilt class has been offered to children and it is the last course of the year.
Crazy Ladies also offered a pajama making class earlier this year.
