Kenora rink wins ladies’ bonspiel

Joan Green of Kenora took top honours over 31 other rinks at the 52nd-annual Fort Frances ladies’ bonspiel here over the weekend.
Her team, which included third Lorraine Green, second Dorothy Holmgren, and lead Celine Hanton, won 9-4 in the ‘A’ final yesterday over the local Judy LaBelle rink, which included third Kathi Gagné, second Laurie Callan, and lead Pat Steele.
“We were here just for fun. I’m curling with three older ladies and we don’t curl together, and we were here just for a good time,” said Green, noting this was the first time the team had played together all season.
“It was fun, and we got the breaks when we needed them,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Dolores Medicine rink from Whitefish Bay, which included third Sharon Tom, second Susan Copenace, and lead Karen Allen, took the ‘B’ crown with a 9-3 decision over Tammy Lamb, whose rink featured third Diane Ross, second Judy McCabe, and lead Christine Denby.
“We had a pretty close game on our first game, but the team played excellent and I’m really proud of the way the girls played,” said Medicine.
“It was just a bonus that we won,” she added.
And taking the ‘C’ title was the Kathie Jackson rink of Fort Frances, which included third Donna Kowalchuk, second Mary Lynne Bondett, and lead Caroline Spencer.
Jackson won 8-2 over Jodi Judd in the final yesterday. Judd’s rink featured third Kim Beaudry, second Judy Lambert, and lead Ida Linklater.
“Jodi is a good curler and I really expected the score to be closer than it was,” said Jackson. “There were just a couple of bad misses and we got lucky a couple of times, and my team curled very well.”
