Local resident Ed Katona said Thursday morning he wasn’t feeling too bad after completing his 550-km round trip to Duluth, Mn. and back Wednesday afternoon.
“No sore joints. No nothing,” he remarked.
“The first day, it was pretty tough biking,” he remarked. “I think I got a bit of heatstroke. I wasn’t feeling very well at all that night.
“But after that, I was feeling better every day.”
Katona and fellow cyclist Arnie Johnsrud, a former Stratton resident now living in Lorette, Man., left here for Duluth at 6 a.m. on Sunday and arrived in Virginia, Mn. around 5:30 p.m. that day.
He noted they faced an obstacle in the form of 25 m.p.h. winds combined with a temperature hovering around 29 C (85 F). “It’s all part of biking. You take what you get,” Katona reasoned.
The pair left Virginia on Monday and arrived in Duluth that afternoon in good time, noted Katona, adding the ride was much easier, with clear skies, moderate temperatures, and no wind blowing against them.
They left Duluth in the rain on Tuesday and headed back to Virginia, where they stopped for the day. “It’s easier cycling in the cooler weather,” Katona said.
The duo started for home at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, arriving here around 3 p.m.
While Katona and his wife, Marge, are still adding up his pledges, he estimated he’ll have about $1,500 in funds raised for the Terry Fox Foundation.
