Karen Madsen grew up in Hopkins, Mn. (a Minneapolis suburb) and began teaching at the young age of 12 when a violin-playing friend had an accident and couldn’t attend school for six weeks.
The teaching bug caught, and she later graduated from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University–Moorhead) in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in music education.
She taught 3rd-12th Grade orchestra and 7th and 8th Grade general music at Dawson-Boyd, Minnesota from 1984-1992, and 5th-12th Grade orchestra and 6th-8th Grade general music at Northfield, Mn. from 1992-2000.
Since 2000, she has taught a large studio of private students from her home in Northfield, as well as in Mankato, Mn., and also runs “String Solutions” (a violin shop).
She has attended the Rainy River Summer Orchestra Camp for more years than she can count; the past several years as a chamber music coach and a co-conductor of the youth orchestra.
Madsen plays cello with the Mankato Symphony Orchestra and the Carleton College Faculty Baroque Trio, and also freelances in the southern Minnesota area.
She has been a Minnesota High School League music adjudicator for more than 15 years. She also composes music for young string players.
In her free time, she is an avid “Star Wars” fan.
