Fort Frances High School, J.W. Walker School, and Robert Moore School have teamed up to present a “Family Well-Being Night.”
It will take place next Wednesday (April 12) from 6-8 p.m. at Fort High.
The purpose is to increase awareness surrounding local service providers and the mental health and wellness supports they can offer.
Families from across the district are invited to learn about yoga, mindfulness, cyber safety, mental health, community gardens, math activities, anxiety, and more.
J.W. Walker principal Kevin Knutsen said the event feature number of booths set up in the high school.
Some of the organizations that will be represented include Family and Children Services, the Métis Nation of Ontario, United Native Friendship Centre, and the Northwestern Health Unit.
There also will be a presentation from the mental health leader on student anxiety.
Knutsen said the event will be a collaboration between the three school councils, along with staff and community partners.
“The school councils each got funding from the ‘Parents Reaching Out Grant’ and decided to combine for one large event,” he explained.
These grants are given by the Ontario government to support projects focused on engaging parents.
The Rainy River District School Board received $15,000 in funding for the 2016/17 year to plan and hold family events, including math nights and mental health nights.
Knutsen said the aim of next Wednesday’s event is to provide information that promotes family health and well-being.
The night also will include snacks and door prizes.
“Lots of activities, lots of food, prizes, and giveaways,” Knutsen promised.
