JENNIFER HORTON (2014 election)

I have been a resident of Fort Frances for the past five years and have made it my home.
I own a business downtown Fort Frances, my husband Andrew works for a local government office and we have a son David, who is seven years old.
I think the residents want a change in representation of our local government and it is wonderful to see the amount of candidates. I am running for council because I want to be a part of the decision-making of our community and be a voice for the younger generation.
I also believe we need diversity in council to reflect our demographics.
I am involved in the community through groups such as the Rainy River District Breast Health Network and the Professional Women’s Network, and have sat on the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce board through previous careers with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and The UPS Store.
I currently act as a liaison through the Business Improvement Association board.
I have enjoyed meeting many new people from the community and have created lasting partnerships since opening my business Curvy Chick, and won the FFCC “Business Women of the Year” Award.
What I would do if the town was in a $1.8-million shortfall is take a good look at every option possible to maintain services. Firstly, I would review expenses and costs, as in my experience watching those are important.
Next, I would source provincial and federal money to fill the gap and look at what we, as a council, can do to bring other businesses into the community to help increase the tax base.
Economic development is very important to me as I have used local and government services to start my own business, and believe it is a staple in any community.
We need to focus on new and “out of the box” ideas to bring a variety of business here as we currently are in transition. We also should work closely with the mining industry and capitalize on that venture.
