Two fires in the region were declared “out” yesterday, including Fort Frances District Fire #14, which was located on an island on the north arm of Rainy Lake.
This lightning-caused blaze was first reported June 11, but allowed to burn under observation “to fulfill its natural role in the environment,” according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Red Lake District Fire #28, located about 20 km east of Sandy Lake, also was declared “out” at 120 hectares in size.
Meanwhile, Red Lake Fire #30, about 30 km north of Keewaywin, currently is classed as “being observed” at 1.5 ha in size.
As well, Nipigon District Fire #24, located about 25 km northwest of Eabamatoong, was “under control” at last report at 126 ha in size.
Infrared scanning has identified only two hot spots remaining on the fire, which has received significant amounts of rainfall over the past three days.
Sioux Lookout District continues to monitor four fires in its northern sector.
There currently are no active fires in the districts of Fort Frances, Dryden, Kenora, and Thunder Bay.
As a result of ongoing storm systems and heavy rain, the MNR said the forest fire hazard is “low” across the entire region, except for a “moderate” hazard in the southwest sector of Fort Frances District.
