Inaugural children’s fair being held here tomorrow

Looking for something for your children to do? Then the Robert Moore School gym will be the place to be tomorrow evening for the inaugural children’s services fair.
Sponsored by Family and Children’s Services developmental services department, the free fair, which runs from 5-8 p.m., will offer something for everyone.
“We wanted to do something where we could promote our services. But also, we wanted to have an event where we could bring together people who provide services to children,” Carolyn Skirten, manager of developmental services, noted Friday.
“A lot of times, the workers get questions from the families they work with, or comments like, ‘There doesn’t seem to be a lot out there for my kids,’” she added.
“This way, people could come out and see a variety of things, not just social service-related services, but activity-related services, like the Girl Guides and that,” Skirten explained.
“We felt we got a fairly good number, with 25 different places. We were happy with that,” she continued. “They seemed really positive about it. When we started asking around, it didn’t take long before responses starting coming in.”
These groups range from the United Native Friendship Centre and Fort Frances Museum to the Northern Therapeutic Riding Association and Fort Frances Nursery School.
Skirten also said she was impressed with the local businesses that donated more than 30 door prizes for the fair.
“I just asked and they said, ‘Oh, sure!’” she remarked.
These prizes include a Nikon digital camera, an iPod Nano, an MP3 player, two bicycles, a children’s gift basket, a family games basket, and many more.
Prize drawings begin at 5:30 p.m.
There will be cake, along with coffee and juice for everyone. As well, free pop and chips will be given out to the first 250 children who come through the door.
