Illegal water crossing costly

the MNR

A tourist outfitter and contractor have been fined for building an illegal water crossing.
Judy Henrickson of Sioux Lookout and Daniel Desmarais of Vermilion Bay both pleaded guilty under the Public Lands Act.
They were fined $2,000 and $4,000, respectively, for constructing a water crossing on Crown land without the required work permit.
Court heard that Henrickson, owner of Uchi Lake Lodge, hired Desmarais, owner of Northland Enterprises Ltd., to deliver and install a septic system at her lodge—a fly-in resort 70 km west of Slate Falls.
With Henrickson’s knowledge, Desmarais installed a used steel deck, intended for a transport truck trailer, to form a temporary bridge across Fly Creek to haul the septic system to the lodge.
Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case March 28 in Red Lake.
The public is reminded that it is an offence to construct a water crossing on Crown land without a work permit from the MNR.
