Ideal weather allows for better sailing conditions

So far, so good. Beautiful, warm conditions continue to prevail for the Rendezvous Yacht Club’s races Wednesday evenings on Sand Bay.
Last week’s race was run under fair conditions with a moderate east wind.
Jack Bartlett and the crew of the “Mad Hatter” finished first with a time of 57.08 while the father-son team of Warren and Billy Wagness took second with a time of 63.46.
The two “TNZ2Z” rounded out the fleet, with Todd Hamilton finishing third (64.08) and Colin Hewitt fourth (65.62).
For the annual Canada Day race, warm conditions with light winds prevailed, prompting the race committee to hold a short windward-leeward course overn Sand Bay’s west end.
This weather enabled most of the boats to fly spinnakers on the downwind legs.
During the final leg of the race, the wind came up–too late to allow for a longer race.
Taking first place was Colin Hewitt (“Ariba”) in 51.14, followed closely by Jack Bartlett (“Mad Hatter”) in 52.02 and Warren Wagness (“Slug”) in 54.17, who finished well despite a delayed start.
Bob Algie (“Salty Dog”), Todd Hamilton (“Through”), and Pat Saboleski and Eric Rude (“Stray Cat”) rounded out the fleet.
The club’s next race will be held tonight (July 12), with the annual Mermaid Rock race going this Saturday at 10 a.m. starting from the Thunderbird Lodge.
“I am not sure what the exact course will be. It’s not going to be long but it’s going to be challenging,” noted Hewitt. “There will probably be about seven or eight boats involved in the race.”
Hewitt stressed this is a scenic course because they will have to go around the island and make spur-of-the-moment decisions.
