“Ice-out” has occurred on Rainy Lake, according to Mike Pawlikowski, a pilot with Rusty Myers Flying Service Ltd. here.
“Yesterday it was all out except for one sheet,” he noted. “But today it is all clear.”
Larry Wood, a former employee with the Ministry of Natural Resources, said the average “ice-out” for Rainy Lake is May 3, with the earliest being April 13 (in 1998) and the latest being May 22 (in 1950).
Mike Williams, a “lamp lighter,” said Lake Kabetogama, Namakan Lake, Sandpoint Lake, and Crane Lake also are all “100 percent free of ice.”
“Lamp lighters” is the term the U.S. Coast Guard uses for individuals who take care of the buoys in lakes.
