ENGAGE, the local young professionals network, is inviting individuals aged 20-35 to go ice-fishing on Rainy Lake this Saturday.
Rainy River Future Development Corp. intern Jamie Petrin said a group will be meeting at 2 p.m. at The Great Bear, located on Highway 11 east of Fort Frances.
“Because we don’t [want] a bunch of people driving out on the lake, we’d like to use as few vehicles as possible,” Petrin noted.

ENGAGE plans to make an afternoon of the outing, and there will be a bonfire.
Depending on how cold it is, the group will stay out until around 5 p.m.
Petrin noted participants do not have to bring fishing gear or food, but they must dress warm.
And if they plan to fish, they also need to have a licence.
Fortunately, they can get a licence at The Great Bear right there on Saturday or in advance at other locations.
“But if they’re not going to be doing the fishing, they just want to come, they don’t need to worry about it [a licence],” Petrin stressed.
This will mark the first outdoor get-together for ENGAGE.
The social network, which aims to engage young people to explore recreation and civic opportunities, held its first mix-and-mingle back in September at From the Grind Up.
A second one followed late last year at Copper River Inn.
“This will be our third time doing something, and this is the most hands-on kind of activity that we’ve done,” noted Petrin.
“It’s an effort to get people out, especially [those] who aren’t from here and would like to go out and do what people around here do but don’t have the connections or the knowledge to do it on their own,” she explained.
The idea of ENGAGE to begin with was to get people out and doing activities in the Fort Frances area, Petrin said.
“So it’s kind of the first time we’re able to now that we have a bit of a group base,” she remarked.
“We hope to keep doing more stuff like this.”
