An east-end home suffered extensive damage from fire this morning.
Firefighters were called to 1108 Second St. E. after a report of a fire in the basement of the residence.
Capt. Wayne Riches said that upon arrival, no smoke was coming from the house.
But he added there were indications of a possible backdraft situation (backdraft is an explosive fire event which occurs when oxygen suddenly is reintroduced to an oxygen-depleted environment, such as when a door is opened to an enclosed space where a fire has been burning).
Crews were established and went into offensive mode, taking direct action to mitigate the spread of the fire.
But when they went into the house to attack the blaze, they had to pull out because of the extreme heat.
Capt. Riches said the crews then went into defensive mode and extinguished the flames, which fully engulfed the interior of the residence.
He added the home suffered “extensive damage.”
The occupants were not injured and were out of the home when the fire department arrived, Capt. Riches noted, adding the home had working smoke alarms.
The cause of the fire still was being investigated this morning.
