With the possibility of a provincial election hovering in the air, former Atikokan resident Cathe Hoszowski has declared her intention to seek the Progressive Conservative nomination for the Kenora-Rainy River riding.
With past experiences in everything from municipal council in Atikokan (until recently when she moved to Fort Frances) to sitting on various regional boards, Hoszowski feels she’s the right person to represent this riding.
“The biggest issue facing this region is being represented by someone who can advocate and be the champion for the riding,” she said Tuesday.
In the past, Hoszowski said that while working with the best intentions, this riding has not had a seat at the decision-making table, which has hindered the region.
“In all likelihood, southern Ontario is going to return a Progressive Conservative government and if we can send down a PC member, there is so much we can do to influence the decision-making process,” she argued.
For instance, Hoszowski said the Northwestern Ontario Associated Chambers of Commerce has come up with a number of initiatives to transform Northwestern Ontario from constantly asking Queen’s Park for money to becoming more self-sufficient.
She feels this group merely needs a better voice to have the government respond to its programs.
Hoszowski and her husband own Little Moose Lodge, a fishing and small game lodge just north of Emo. She said her experiences as an entrepreneur make her more than familiar with the concerns of the tourist industry in this area.
Her diverse background also includes working with the 807 Northwest Network facility (which worked to extend broadband infrastructure through Northwestern Ontario), the Atikokan Crisis Centre, and now as social housing manager for the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board.
Hoszowski said she would not have sought the PC nomination if Fort Frances Mayor Glenn Witherspoon, the president of the local provincial riding association, had not indicated he no longer was interested in running.
Mayor Witherspoon could not be reached for comment by press time.
NDP leader and incumbent MPP Howard Hampton already was acclaimed as his candidate in this riding back in June. There’s no word yet on who might seek the Liberal nod.
