Press Release
Ontario is repairing Highways 11 and 502 near Fort Frances.
These repairs will improve driver safety and boost employment in the north.
More than 21 km of Highway 11 and 18 km of Highway 502 will undergo construction, including earth and rock ditching and clearing.
These projects are part of the Northern Highways Program. Initial work will be carried out this year, with completion scheduled for 2010.
This work will create 70 jobs, and help people and goods get to their destination more safely and efficiently.
“The Ontario government is creating new economic activity and jobs throughout the region by improving northern transportation infrastructure,” said Northern Development, Mines and Forestry minister Michael Gravelle.
“Expanding and improving transportation infrastructure generates construction jobs and promotes economic growth in the north,” noted Transportation minister Jim Bradley.
The $5.6-million Highway 11 contract has been awarded to Aecon Construction while the $3.9-million Highway 502 contract has been awarded to Pioneer Construction.
The 2009 Ontario Budget committed $648 million in northern highway rehabilitation and expansion in 2009-10.
Investments in Northern Ontario’s highway infrastructure in 2009-10 will create an estimated 4,700 jobs.
