High school academic recognition program deemed a success

Under a new program started last November at Fort Frances High School to recognize the academic success of students there, discount cards entitled all Honour Roll students to special privileges at businesses throughout the district.
These privileges were available to any students who attained Honour Roll status (80 percent or higher) on at least two of the four Honour Rolls published last year.
Grade nine students who achieved Honour Roll status both times during their first semester were given cards to use during the second semester.
The program has been quite successful, and there are hopes of continuing it in future years.
“It was really good,” said 11th-grader Christina Sletmoen. “Students who work really hard should get rewarded for it.”
“It’s a great idea and encourages students to put all their effort into school,” agreed Angela Barron.
There are many benefits of this program for both the students and the participating businesses.
Discounts encourage students to visit businesses frequently, provides an incentive for students to do well in school, and recognizes the efforts of students who strive for academic excellence–boosting their self-confidence and self-worth.
“I like the fact that it gives recognition to something other than sports,” noted Pamala Cherry.
Some of the businesses participating this year included Mr. Sub, Tracy’s Hair Studio, Emo Drugs, Pizza Hut, and many more.
“We want to make next year’s program bigger and better by getting more businesses participating all over the district–not just Fort Frances,” said Marnie Cumming, teacher advisor of the Honour Society at Fort High.
“Anyway we can acknowledge the students’ hard efforts is a great idea,” noted FFHS vice-principal Mary Hickling.
