After two challenges in the “Canada’s Greatest Explorer” competition, local resident Joshua Henry was in ninth place in the standings and on the cusp of elimination.
With the bottom four competitors being eliminated after the conclusion of the third episode, Henry needed a strong showing to secure a spot in the next round.
Some ingenuity, along with a lesson from his grandfather, proved to be enough to get him into the next round.
In the latest episode, which is available to watch online at WoodsExplorer.ca, competitors had to create a camping “hack” and were judged by camping expert Kevin Callan.
Competitors were expected to create something that was both unique, creative, and practical.
“I’ve got a super simple hack,” Henry told Callan and host Ricky Forbes in the episode.
“When you’re out backpacking or you’re outdoors, everyone’s likely wearing a shirt,” he explained in the episode.
“I’ve been tossed out of my canoe, my first-aid kit is down the river, I’ve got nothing left, my arm is out of place—but I have a T-shirt on,” he imagined.
Henry took his shirt and twisted it around his body to create a sling for his arm, while noting that he learned the hack from his grandfather.
“He’s in the Ministry of Natural Resources here in Ontario,” he explained.
“He showed me, and we actually had to do it on my cousin once,” he added.
“We had an arrow stuck in a tree and he shook it … the branch fell off and broke his arm,” he recalled.
After the demonstration, Callan was noticeably impressed with the hack.
“I’ve never seen that before in my life, they’re going to get good points for that,” he remarked.
“It’s so easy, so simple—in fact I think that shirt is a better sling than the sling you get in the first-aid kits,” added Callan.
Henry was awarded third place out of twelve in the competition, which gave him a boost in the standings.
Now Henry is among the remaining eight contestants that continue to vie for the title of “Canada’s Greatest Explorer.”
Along with the title, the winner of the competition will also take home $25,000.
