It’s that time of year again where your craving for take-out pizzas mean supporting a good community cause.
Like they have in years past, Boston Pizza Fort Frances will be offering heart-shaped pizzas for Valentine’s Day weekend, with an added bonus of proceeds from the sales going towards helping those in need.
On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, $1 from each heart-shaped pizza and $1 from every chocolate explosion dessert will be donated to the Fort Frances High School Backpack program, which helps to ensure that students at the school are provided with nutritious food at times when they might otherwise not.
Backpack programs have grown in popularity in recent years as people across the country struggle to afford healthy food amidst job or wage insecurities and, more recently, pandemic related losses. These programs typically see a backpack filled with nutritious and non-perishable food sent home with students in need so that they don’t go hungry.
Boston Pizza Fort Frances’ Dale Fortes explained that after the year that was 2020, particularly with the impacts of COVID-19, partnering with the high school just made sense.
“We’re excited about going into this year,” he said.
“Last year was a great success. Last year we did Community Chest and this year we’ve adopted the backpack for kids program at the high school. It’s been an interesting year for everybody and one of the things that has definitely come to light is the needs of our youth. This is one of those areas that has become more topical and more of a need, and it’s something we wanted to participate with in some capacity, so we joined with the high school to do that.”
Fortes said people in town can order any small or medium sized pizza and it will come in a heart shape, with people being able to order ahead or online.
“Any of our gourmet pizzas, any of the guest’s favourites, they’re all available,” he said.
