Some 125 hams will be filling the Salvation Army’s food hampers this holiday season thanks to the support of the local Wal-Mart store.
The big donation came as the year rolled to an end and there still were funds set aside for charity projects, explained manager Darryl Skinner.
“We thought what better than to step up to the plate and help the Salvation Army,” he added.
The 125 hams will go towards the almost 200 hampers that are being put together by the Salvation Army for people in need across the district.
Alongside the hampers, there are 40 families who are being “adopted” for the Christmas season, noted Capt. Angel Sandoval of the Salvation Army here.
While the hams are a generous donation, there still are a lot of hampers needing to be filled, Capt. Sandoval added, estimating the Salvation Army currently is only 60 percent of the way there in meeting the needs of the community.
“It’s extremely slow in donations, and with the kettles, too,” Capt. Sandoval said, comparing it to previous years.
Alongside adopting a family, or filling hampers, time is another thing local residents can donate.
“We still need volunteers for the kettles, as well as volunteers to help put together the hampers,” Capt. Sandoval said.
