If the information printed on a box of crackers, jug of juice, or food found in the grocery aisles has puzzled you, then the “Grocery Store Tour” set for next Wednesday (May 26) just may be right for you.
Organized by the Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre and Sunset Country Métis, the tour will begin with a presentation on healthy eating at 11 a.m. at the Métis Hall (426 Victoria Ave.)
That will be followed by lunch and then a “tour” down the aisles of Safeway here.
“By the end of the tour, participants will have an increased ability to read and understand ingredient lists and nutrition facts tables,” noted Sara Campbell, a dietetic intern in the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, who currently is doing a placement at the access centre.
“The primary goal is for participants to use what they learn during the tour to apply the skills that will enable them to make healthier food choices,” she said.
“Participants will also learn some of the key messages in Canada’s Food Guide, as well as other key nutritional information about different food products,” Campbell added.
Those interested in participating should pre-register by contacting Anne Marie Armstrong with the Sunset Country Métis at 274-1386.
